OILY SKIN HACKS

This is for all my oily Sisters battling excessive oil production, enlarged pores, acne breakouts and blackheads - the hallmarks of oily skin. Whilst genetics can be a huge causative factor In your skin type, other factors come into play, such as product choice, diet, lifestyle and hormones. Here are my top 5 hacks for stopping those flare ups dead in their tracks... over time 😊. 1. Choose the right cleanser So, using an oil cleanser on blemish-prone, oily skin – sounds counterproductive, but I learned a long time ago that spots have less to do with oily skin, and more to do with hormones, being run down, and using comedogenic products. Therefore, the more you nourish and treat your skin, the better it is – which makes sense, but believe me, it took a long time for me to get there! For oily skin, cleansing oils can be a godsend! They are excellent for removing makeup, cleansing your skin, all without stripping your skin of good oils or leaving it feeling tight. post cleanse. Think of it this way, the oil attracts your skin's sebum, so you can rinse both away without stripping your skin. I get that oil cleansing is somewhat of an acquired taste, so if this isn’t your vibe, a cleasner with salicylic acid is a great option. They are great for providing your skin with exfoliation, lifting off pore clogging debris to reveal a clearer, smoother complexion. 2. Tone the toner down Toners contain alcohol and this can have the opposite effect of what you set out to achieve, using them in the first place. Contrary to popular belief .. you don’t have to use a toner every time you cleanse. Once or twice a week is sufficient.

I have tried to explain this to my clients this way ... Your skin need a healthy balance of its natural oil barrier to function at its optimum. The skin, also happens to be a rather clever organ .. if you strip it of its natural oil balance .. it thinks YIKES... and goes into shock .. producing more oils to compensate for the loss. Inevitably.. you end up with an over production... and the cycle continues. 3. Don’t be afraid of Moisture This is really important ladies. I mentioned this briefly in my last post. I have a client, who uses a really strong salicylic acid cleanser .. followed by a Glycolic toner .. and no moisturiser 😢!!!

I have found, over the years, clients with oily skin dread the moisturising step of their regime. The key is to use non comedogenic moisturisers, serums, and lotions, water based and or containing hyaluronic acid. I will do another post soon giving you a list of products that fit this bill. Hydration is key to keeping your skin balanced and healthy, so this is a very key step in your regime and will actually protect your skin from external factors such as bacteria. 4. Have regular facials This cannot be overemphasised. As intelligent as the skin is, as an organ, it gets ‘tired and lazy’. It stops functioning at its optimum if it’s neglected and it’s ability to repair itself becomes impaired. Whilst you may be doing all the right things, sometimes the skin needs a jumpstart .. and a good facial can often offer that. A good deep cleanse, steam, and where necessary, extractions, can be just the wake up your skin needs for it to be receptive to the products you use at home daily. 5. Make wise make up decisions Asking a person with active acne or blemishes to go without make up is often a tall order. A lot easier said than done. Over the years, I’ve realised, whilst it pays off, if it can be achieved, it’s not always possible to execute. With that in mind, I always advise my clients to be extra careful when picking out their make up .. choosing powder for example, over foundation which can tend to clog pores. Where possible, go for brands that offer oil free, mineral based alternatives .. lighter textures and an oil control range.
